100 Zohar Namaz Faqs

1. How many Rakats are there in Zohar Namaz?

There are a total of 12 Rakats in the Zohar prayer according to the Hanafi school of thought. The sequence is:

  • 4 Rakats Sunnah (Mu’akkadah)
  • 4 Rakats Fard (Obligatory)
  • 2 Rakats Sunnah (Mu’akkadah)
  • 2 Rakats Nafl (Optional)

2. What is the correct time to perform Zohar Namaz?

The time for Zohar begins immediately after Zawaal (when the sun passes its highest point at noon) and ends when the time for Asr prayer begins.

3. Is Zohar Namaz recited silently or loudly?

Zohar is a silent prayer (Sirri). You should recite the Quran (Surah Al-Fatiha and other Surahs) in a low voice or whisper, such that only you can hear it, unlike the loud recitations in Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha.

4. Can I pray only the 4 Fard Rakats of Zohar?

Yes, if you are short on time (e.g., at work or school), the 4 Fard Rakats are the mandatory requirement for the prayer to be valid. However, leaving the Sunnah Mu’akkadah habitually without a valid reason is considered blameworthy.

5. How do I make Niyat (Intention) for Zohar Namaz?

You can make the intention in your heart. If you wish to verbalize it, you can say: “I intend to perform [Number] Rakats of [Fard/Sunnah] of Zohar prayer for the sake of Allah, facing the Qibla.”

6. What is the sequence of Zohar prayer?

The correct order is: First, pray the 4 Sunnah, then the 4 Fard, followed by the 2 Sunnah, and finally the 2 Nafl.

7. Do women pray the same number of Rakats for Zohar as men?

Yes, women pray the same number of Rakats (12 total) as men. The only difference lies in the body posture during Ruku and Sujood, which is more compact for women.

8. How do I pray Qaza (Makeup) for a missed Zohar prayer?

If you missed Zohar and the time has passed, you only need to make up the 4 Fard Rakats. The Sunnah prayers are dropped for Qaza. You should make the intention for “Qaza of Zohar.”

9. When does Zohar time end?

Zohar time ends when Asr time starts. In the Hanafi school, this is when the shadow of an object becomes twice its length. In other schools (Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanbali), it ends when the shadow equals the object’s length.

10. What Surahs should I read in Zohar Namaz?

In the first two Fard Rakats, read Surah Al-Fatiha followed by another Surah. In the last two Fard Rakats, read only Surah Al-Fatiha. For Sunnah prayers, read Fatiha + a Surah in all Rakats.

11. What is the difference between Zohar and Jumu’ah (Friday) prayer?

On Fridays, the Jumu’ah prayer (2 Fard Rakats with a sermon/Khutbah) replaces Zohar for men in the congregation. Women and those unable to attend the congregation continue to pray the standard Zohar at home.

The Prophet (PBUH) mentioned that during Zohar time, the gates of heaven are opened, and he wished for his good deeds to ascend at that time.

No. You only recite Sana (Subhanaka Allahumma…) in the very first Rakat of the prayer, immediately after saying the opening Takbir (Allahu Akbar).

17. If I join the Jamaat (congregation) late, what do I do?

If you join the Imam after he has finished some Rakats, follow him until he finishes. After he says Salam, stand up (without saying Salam) and complete the Rakats you missed.

18. Can I pray the 4 Sunnah and 4 Fard continuously without Salam?

No. The 4 Sunnah and 4 Fard are separate prayers. You must conclude the 4 Sunnah with Salam before making a new intention and starting the 4 Fard.

19. Is there a specific Dua after Zohar prayer?

There are many Duas, but a common practice is to recite Ayat al-Kursi, Tasbeeh (SubhanAllah 33x, Alhamdulillah 33x, Allahu Akbar 34x), and other personal supplications.

20. What is Zawaal time?

Zawaal is the brief moment when the sun is at its absolute zenith (highest point). It is forbidden (Haram) to pray exactly at this moment. Zohar time begins once the sun starts to decline (moves past Zawaal).

21. What if I join the Zohar Jamaat (congregation) late?

If you join after the Imam has finished some Rakats, you are a Masbooq.

  2. Follow the Imam until he says the final Salam.
  3. Do not say Salam. Instead, stand up and perform the missed Rakats individually.

22. Can I pray Zohar and Asr together (Combined)?

In the Hanafi school, you cannot combine prayers (Jam’ Bayn as-Salatayn) purely for convenience or work. You must pray Zohar in its time and Asr in its time. Combining is only allowed during Hajj (at Arafat and Muzdalifah).

Note: Other schools (Shafi’i/Hanbali) allow combining for travel or rain, but Hanafis generally do not.

23. What should I do if I missed the 4 Sunnah before the Fard?

If the Jamaat for Fard was starting, and you had to skip the 4 Sunnah, you should pray them after the 4 Fard.

  • Order: 4 Fard $\rightarrow$ 2 Sunnah $\rightarrow$ Make up the 4 Sunnah $\rightarrow$ 2 Nafl.

24. Can I pray Zohar sitting on a chair?

25. Is it better to delay Zohar in extreme heat?

Yes. It is Mustahabb (recommended) to delay Zohar slightly in very hot summers until the heat intensity breaks (this is called Ibrad), provided it does not cross into Asr time. In winter, it is better to pray early.

26. What if I forget to recite a Surah after Al-Fatiha in the first two Rakats?

If you forget to read a Surah (after Fatiha) in the first two Rakats of Fard, you must perform Sajda Sahw (Prostration of Forgetfulness) at the end of the prayer to correct the mistake.

  • Plane/Train: Yes, if you cannot get off. You must try to stand and face Qibla if possible.

In the Hanafi school, holding and reading from the Quran text during Salah invalidates the prayer. You must recite from memory. (Shafi’is allow reading from a Mushaf).

30. Is a hat (Topi) or head covering required for men in Zohar?

Covering the head is Sunnah and respectful (Adab). Praying bareheaded out of laziness is considered Makruh Tanzih (disliked but valid). If you have no hat, the prayer is still accepted.

31. Can I pray Zohar with my eyes closed to focus better?

Yes, you should recite Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem silently before Surah Al-Fatiha in every Rakat, and before the additional Surah in the first two Rakats.

Common invalidators include:

  • Turning the chest away from the Qibla.
  • Breaking Wudu (gas/using toilet).

35. If I doubt whether I prayed 3 or 4 Rakats, what do I do?

  • Perform one more Rakat.
  • Perform Sajda Sahw at the end.

36. Can I pray Zohar behind an Imam who is Shafi’i or Salafi?

Yes, according to the majority of Hanafi scholars, it is permissible to pray behind an Imam of another Sunni school, provided he fulfills the basic conditions of prayer (e.g., proper Wudu).

No. There is no Qunut (standing supplication) in Zohar prayer. Qunut is generally only for Witr (or Fajr in the Shafi’i school).

38. What is the difference between “Sunnah” and “Nafl” in Zohar?

  • Sunnah (Mu’akkadah): The Prophet (PBUH) rarely missed these. Skipping them habitually is sinful. (The 4 before and 2 after Fard).

39. Can I pray Zohar in a T-shirt and Jeans?

40. Does sleeping before Zohar break my Wudu?

If you slept lying down or reclining such that your rear was not firmly seated, your Wudu is broken, and you must renew it before praying Zohar. Sleeping firmly seated (like on a chair) usually does not break Wudu.

Yes. In Hanafi Fiqh, if blood flows from a wound (even slightly moving from its source), the Wudu is broken. (Note: In Shafi’i Fiqh, bleeding does not break Wudu).

50. If I travel during Zohar time, do I pray full or Qasr?

It depends on when you leave the city boundary:

52. Do I raise my hands (Raf-ul-Yadain) before Ruku in Zohar?

In the Hanafi school, you only raise your hands (Raf-ul-Yadain) once at the beginning of the prayer (Takbir Tahrima). You do not raise them before or after Ruku. (Other schools do raise them).

53. Can I pray Zohar behind an Imam who prays very fast?

54. What if I pass gas at the very end (during Tashahhud)?

If you have completed the Tashahhud (recited Attahiyat) and then your Wudu breaks before saying Salam, your prayer is technically valid (completed), but it is Wajib to perform Wudu and say Salam to close it properly. If it happens before finishing Tashahhud, the prayer is broken.

55. Is a Sutrah (barrier) required if I pray alone?

56. Can I close my eyes to focus better in Zohar?

58. What if I forget to sit for the first Tashahhud (after 2nd Rakat)?

If you stand up fully for the 3rd Rakat, do not sit back down. Continue the prayer and perform Sajda Sahw at the end. If you sit back down after standing fully, your prayer will be invalidated (in some views) or sinful.

59. Can women go to the mosque for Zohar Jamaat?

In the Hanafi school, it is generally considered Makruh Tahrimi for women to attend the congregational prayers at the mosque due to the risk of Fitnah (historically). It is deemed better and more rewarding for them to pray at home.

Yes, in Hanafi Fiqh, vomiting a mouthful (meaning you cannot keep it in your mouth without effort) breaks Wudu. You must renew Wudu before praying.

61. Do I recite Surah Al-Fatiha when praying behind the Imam in Zohar?

62. If I missed Fajr, can I pray Zohar first?

If you have missed less than 6 prayers in your life (or have cleared all previous Qaza), you are a “Sahib-ut-Tartib.” You must pray the missed Fajr before you can pray Zohar. If you pray Zohar first remembering you missed Fajr, your Zohar is invalid.

63. Is it allowed to pray Zohar on a prayer mat with pictures of the Kaaba?

Yes, it is permitted. However, it is better not to stand directly on the image of the Kaaba or Mosque out of respect. Using a plain prayer mat is preferred to avoid visual distraction.

64. Food is served and Zohar time is running out. What should I do?

If the time is ample, eat first to remove the distraction of hunger. If the time is tight (Zohar time is about to end), you must pray first. The Prophet (PBUH) advised eating first if the meal is ready, to ensure concentration (Khushu) in prayer.

65. Does uncertainty about Wudu break my Zohar prayer?

No. The rule is: “Certainty is not removed by doubt.” If you are sure you made Wudu, but only doubt whether you lost it, your Wudu is considered valid. You should not break your prayer based on mere doubt.

66. Can I pray Zohar while holding a baby?

Yes, if necessary. You can hold a baby while standing and put them down when going into Ruku/Sajda. However, if the baby’s diaper is impure (Najis) and the filth is more than a Dirham’s size, carrying them would invalidate the prayer.

67. Do I need to say Adhan if I am praying Zohar alone at home?

It is Sunnah to call Adhan and Iqamah even when praying alone, but it is not Fard. If you pray without them, your prayer is valid (especially if the neighborhood mosque’s Adhan was heard), but you miss the reward.

68. Is perfume containing alcohol allowed for prayer?

Yes. Contemporary Hanafi scholars generally rule that the synthetic alcohol used in modern perfumes/sprays is not the impure wine (Khamr) prohibited in the Quran. Therefore, wearing it does not invalidate Wudu or Prayer.

69. What if I yawn during Zohar Namaz?

You should try to suppress the yawn as much as possible (e.g., by biting the lip). If you cannot, cover your mouth with the back of your left hand while standing. Yawning is considered to be from Shaytan (laziness).

70. Can I say the Niyat (Intention) in English or Urdu?

In the Hanafi method, you form a circle with your thumb and middle finger. When you say “La ilaha” (There is no god), you raise your index finger. When you say “Illallah” (except Allah), you lower it. You do not keep moving it up and down.

If you forgot a Wajib part of the prayer (requiring Sajda Sahw) and then said Salam to finish:

  • If you have turned away or spoken, the prayer must be repeated.

75. Can I pray Zohar if I am bleeding from a small cut?

Laughing outside of prayer does not break Wudu. Laughing only breaks Wudu if it happens during the prayer (Salah). So, you can proceed to pray Zohar.

80. What is the rule for “Tartib” (Sequence) in Qaza prayers?

If you have missed, for example, Zohar and Asr, you must pray them in order (Zohar then Asr). If you pray Asr first, it is invalid (unless you forgot you missed Zohar, or the time for the current prayer is critically short).

81. Can I talk between the Sunnah and Fard of Zohar?

It is Makruh (disliked) to talk about worldly matters between the Sunnah and Fard prayers. Doing so reduces the reward of the prayer. It is best to remain silent or engage in Dhikr while waiting for the Jamaat.

82. Is my Zohar valid if I have nail polish on?

No. Regular nail polish creates a waterproof barrier. If water does not reach the nail surface during Wudu, the Wudu is invalid, and consequently, the Zohar prayer is invalid. (Breathable/Halal polish is a subject of debate; caution is advised).

83. Can we hold a “Second Jamaat” for Zohar if we missed the first?

In the Hanafi school, if a mosque has a designated Imam and fixed time, holding a second congregation (Jamaat) in the same spot is Makruh Tahrimi (strongly disliked). It is better to pray individually or move to a corner/different area of the mosque away from the Mihrab.

84. Should I run to join the Zohar Jamaat before the Imam goes into Ruku?

No. The Prophet (PBUH) forbade running to prayer. You should walk with calmness and dignity (Sakina). Whatever you catch, pray; whatever you miss, complete it afterwards.

85. Can I make Dua in Sujood during the Fard of Zohar?

In the Hanafi school, you should only recite the Tasbeeh (Subhana Rabbiyal A’la) during the Sujood of Fard prayers. You cannot recite Arabic Duas or Duas in your own language during the Fard Sujood. (This is allowed in Nafl/Sunnah prayers).

86. Does a cat passing in front of me break my Zohar prayer?

No. A cat (or any animal) passing in front of you does not invalidate the prayer. However, you should try to prevent it from passing if possible, without excessive movement.

87. Can I recite the same Surah in both Rakat of Zohar?

It is Makruh Tanzih (mildly disliked) to repeat the exact same Surah in both the first and second Rakat of Fard unnecessarily. However, the prayer is valid. It is better to read two different Surahs following the order of the Quran.

88. Is Zohar valid if I pray on a soft mattress or bed?

The prayer is valid only if the mattress is firm enough that your forehead stabilizes and you feel the hardness of the surface underneath. If your face sinks in and does not find a stable base, the Sajda (and prayer) is invalid.

89. Can I wipe sweat or dust from my forehead during prayer?

It is Makruh to wipe your face during prayer unless the sweat/dust is causing pain or blocking your vision (distracting you from Khushu). It is better to leave it until after the prayer ends.

90. Can I pray Zohar behind an Imam who smokes or shaves his beard?

According to Hanafi Fiqh, appointing such a person as the regular Imam is Makruh Tahrimi (sinful for the committee). However, praying behind him is valid (Sahih), and you do not need to repeat the prayer.

91. What if the Imam makes a mistake in recitation (Zohar is silent)?

Since Zohar is silent, you likely won’t hear a mistake unless the Imam speaks up. If the Imam makes a major mistake, the followers should say “SubhanAllah” (Luqmah) to alert him.

92. Can men rest their elbows on the ground during Sujood?

No. For men, resting forearms/elbows on the ground is Makruh. Men should keep their elbows raised and away from their sides. (Women, however, should keep their elbows flat on the ground in Hanafi Fiqh).

93. Is it allowed to look up at the sky during Zohar prayer?

No. It is forbidden and sinful to look up at the sky during Salah. Your gaze should be fixed on the place of Sujood. The Prophet (PBUH) issued a severe warning against this action.

94. Does using hand sanitizer with alcohol break my Wudu or Prayer?

No. As mentioned earlier, the synthetic alcohol in sanitizers is not considered impure (Najis) in modern Hanafi Fatwas. You can pray with it on your hands/clothes.

95. Can I pray Zohar in a car if I can’t find a place to stop?

If you are physically able to exit the car, you must stop and pray on the ground standing up. Praying sitting in a car without a medical excuse makes the Fard prayer invalid. (Exceptions exist for fear of safety/enemy).

96. What is “Istihsan” regarding Zohar time?

In extreme heat, it is recommended to delay Zohar to the cooler part of the afternoon (before Asr). In winter, it is recommended to pray Zohar earlier (hasten it).

Burping does not break Wudu or Prayer. However, doing it intentionally or loudly is contrary to the etiquette (Adab) of prayer. You should try to stifle it.

98. Can I pray Zohar with a mask on (Face Mask)?

Praying with the mouth/nose covered is generally Makruh Tahrimi unless there is a valid reason (like a contagious disease pandemic, severe dust, or allergy). In times of necessity (Darura), it is permitted without dislike.

99. Do I have to say “Bismillah” before the Surah in every Rakat?

The most accepted Hanafi view is that you should recite Bismillah silently before Surah Al-Fatiha in every Rakat. It is not necessary before the second Surah, though some scholars say it is good to do so.

100. If I pray Zohar but my earnings are Haram, is it accepted?

The prayer fulfills your obligation (you won’t be punished for missing prayer), but it may not be accepted in terms of reward. The Prophet (PBUH) stated that Allah is Pure and accepts only what is pure.
